Chris Armas comes off of the pitch this season to become an assistant coach under Denis Hamlett. Armas had spent the past ten seasons with the Fire as a midfielder.

The Adelphi University alum was selected as an NCAA All-American his senior year. In 1994 he joined the USISL Long Island Rough Riders leading them to a championship in 1995, while also being named an all-star. Armas reached the MLS in 1996 with the L.A. Galaxy playing in 22 matches. He helped the Galaxy reach the playoffs in both seasons there, 1996 and 1997. Prior to the 1998 season, Armas was acquired by the Chicago Fire. He helped the Fire capture the MLS Cup in 1998 and reach the MLS Cup Finals again in 2000 and in 2003. The 7-time MLS All-Star finished his illustrious playing career in 2007 having tallied 12 goals and 48 assists in his career. In addition, Armas ranks in the top 5 on the Fire's all-time list with 42 assists (2nd), 13 game winning assists (2nd), 19,018 minutes played (3rd), 214 games played (3rd), and 212 games started (2nd).

In addition, Armas helped the Fire to five Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup finals including victories in 1998, 2000, and 2006. He was also a member of the U.S. National team from 1998 until 2005. While with the team, he helped the U.S. win the CONCACAF Gold Cup twice, in 2002 and 2005.

Armas and his wife, Justine, have two sons: Christopher, Jr. (6) and Aleksei (3).
