Coming off of a breakout year in 2006, Fire midfielder Justin Mapp continued to make progress at the highest levels through the 2007 season. The year began on a positive note, as the Mississippi native was invited by U.S. Men's National Team head coach Bob Bradley to the first camp of 2007 in early January. Mapp subbed into the U.S. squad's first international friendly of the year against Denmark, and stood out with an assist in a confident 3-1 victory on January 20. The 23-year old followed that performance by playing in the U.S. win over Ecuador on March 25 and all 90 minutes against Guatemala on March 28 before the start of the MLS regular season.
Mapp began his 2007 Fire campaign displaying the same confidence and precision that characterized his National Team performances. In the home opener at TOYOTA PARK, Mapp assisted on the first goal of the year. In the summer, he was once again tabbed for National Team duty as the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the CONMEBOL Copa America approached. Mapp played in all three games for the U.S. in Copa America, starting against Argentina (6-28) and Colombia (7-05), and coming on as a sub versus Paraguay (7-02).
After reconvening to play with the Fire on July 7, Mapp suffered a severe right ankle sprain on August 25 that kept him sidelined until late in the season. The midfielder did return to action in the final game of 2007 when he came off the bench for 13 minutes in the Eastern Conference Championship. Now fully-recovered and fit to play in 2008, the 2006 RadioShack MLS Best XI selection is expected to once again use his elusive speed and natural ability to shed defenders on Chicago's left and right flanks.
