For Fire forward Chris Rolfe, the 2007 Fire season seemed like dιjΰ vu. At the outset of Chicago's 2006 campaign, Rolfe scored three goals and an assist in just four games and was in red-hot form, leading to then-U.S. Men's National Team head coach Bruce Arena naming him as one of 12 alternates for the summer's USA World Cup squad. Rolfe's blazing 2006 start came to an abrupt halt when he suffered a concussion in early June, leading the Ohio native to a place he was unaccustomed - the Fire bench. Between the concussion and a deep thigh bruise suffered upon his return, Rolfe missed nearly a dozen games due to injury during the summer, but he proved his resilience and contributed quality minutes after the All-Star break, tallying four more goals down the second half stretch to finish third on the Fire's goal-scoring chart.
As the 2007 season approached, Rolfe once again caught the eye of the U.S. for a second consecutive year, receiving an invitation from head coach Bob Bradley to join for two training camps in January and February. The 25-year old recorded four goals and three assists for the Fire in the first six games of the season, but an ankle sprain suffered on May 12 at Toronto FC sidelined the standout forward for 11 games. Rolfe recovered in time to help the Fire gain crucial points at the end of the season, adding offensive punch as a forward and a right-sided midfielder. His long-ranged "Sierra Mist Goal of the Week" strike in Week 25 proved to be a game-tying one in a 1-1 draw at Dallas and a game-tying goal on Oct. 6 helped Chicago earn a 2-1 win at home over New England. Rolfe also provided a goal in each leg of the 2007 Eastern Conference Semifinal series matches against D.C., helping the Fire to the Eastern Conference Final.
Rolfe's 2008 season has already continued the reoccurring theme, as the University of Dayton product was called into U.S. Men's camp in January and February before joining the Fire for preseason training. Whether up top or as a midfielder, Chicago's coaching staff expects that if Rolfe remains healthy, the 2005 MLS Rookie of the Year nominee will once again produce big numbers.
