If 2006 was Chicago Fire defender Gonzalo Segares' breakout year, then 2007 was the icing on the cake. The 2007 Fire Defender of the Year played every minute of the first 20 matches of 2007 until having to sit on August 25 due to yellow card accumulation, a byproduct of his hard-nosed, stingy defensive efforts. Not only did Segares start and play in 27 league matches for the Fire, he also received his first international "caps" for the Costa Rican National Team. The San Jose, Costa Rica native saw time for the "Ticos" in their Sept. 9 friendly against Honduras, as well as the Sept. 12 friendly against Canada. The 25-year-old was a lynchpin of the Fire postseason run in 2007, playing every minute of both legs in the Eastern Conference Semifinal Series against D.C. United, as well as contributing another 90 minutes in the Eastern Conference Championship against the New England Revolution.
Segares began his professional career with the Chicago Fire as a 2005 SuperDraft third round selection and quickly proved himself during his rookie campaign. Segares was in the Fire's starting eleven for the first three games of the 2006 campaign until an ankle injury sidelined the young defender for a month of action. Upon his return, Segares came back with a vengeance, starting 19 of Chicago's last 24 games. Segares also helped the "Men in Red" earn an MLS club-record fourth Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title in 2006, playing every minute in the tournament's Final. He is expected to hold down the left side of defense in Chicago's starting XI in 2008, while balancing burgeoning duties for both club and country.
