After ending the 2007 regular season with a bang by scoring a 93+ minute stoppage-time goal to lift the Fire 1-0 over the Los Angeles Galaxy and secure a fourth place position in the Eastern Conference postseason play, John Thorrington had a lot to live up to as he entered 2008. Prior to returning to America with the Fire in the middle of 2007, Thorrington spent his entire professional career in Europe, beginning as the youngest American to ever sign with a team in the English Premiership after joining famed club Manchester United in 1997. Thorrington served as a reservist for both United and German powerhouse Bayern Leverkusen for four years before gaining first-team experience with Huddersfield Town and Grimsby Town of the English Second and Third Divisions. After plying his trade for eight years in European soccer circles, Thorrington returned stateside in the winter of 2005 to join the ranks of Major League Soccer with the Chicago Fire. Thorrington expected to make an immediate impact in the Fire's midfield during his first season with Chicago but injuries throughout the 2005 and 2006 seasons limited his time on the field. The 28-year old spent the early part of 2007 rehabbing an injury before rejoining the Fire in mid-September. Despite only appearing in two games, Thorrington left his footprint on the 2007 season, and that success carried over to 2008. Thorrington tallied five goals and one assist for the Fire, including three game-winning goals and his lone assist was also a game-winner. His 2009 season again was hampered by injuries cutting his playing time at the end of the season. As the Fire plans for the 2010 season, they are counting on Thorrington to stay healthy and once again contribute to the Fire attack, particularly in must win situations.
